Did you know that most Americans are estimated to move an average of 11.4 times in their life? Whether you’re moving across town to be closer to work or to move into your dream home, here are some helpful hints on how to pack up a house to make your next move go smoothly.

Get Rid of the Stuff You Don’t Need

The first step of packing up a house is to get rid of the things that you don’t want to take with you. Taking the time to declutter and organize before you begin packing not only makes packing easier but cuts down on moving costs and makes unpacking in your new space less stressful.

To start, sort through all of your drawers, cabinets and shelves to place items into three categories: keep, sell, trash. Sell items online or at a garage sale, pack up the items to keep and trash or donate the rest. Start this process at least a few weeks before you move so that you have the time to organize and get rid of the items you no longer need.

Pack Up Your House by Room

Packing up room-by-room is the easiest way to stay organized during a move. By packing up each individual room, you can make sure that nothing gets left behind, prevent burnout and make unpacking in your new home easier.

When deciding how to pack up a house, consider the usage of your home. Start with the least used rooms of your house, like the basement and guest rooms. Move onto the kitchen and living rooms, making sure to store any fine art or fragile items in climate-controlled storage. Save your bedroom and bathroom to pack up last.

Keep Records of Your Boxes

As you pack, label every box with a number and keep a running list of what is packed away in each box. Keeping a packing inventory will help you when unloading boxes and unpacking in your new home.

Prepare A Box of Essentials

To make your move as comfortable as possible, pack up a box of essentials that you will need in the last few nights in your home. Some essentials you may want to include in your box are:

  • Toilet paper
  • Pet food and dishes
  • Dish soap and a few sets of dishware
  • Snacks and beverages
  • Change of clothes for each family member
  • Scissors

Gather Your Packing Supplies

There’s nothing worse than dedicating a whole weekend to packing up your house, just to realize that you don’t have all of the moving supplies that you need. Make sure to consider what packing supplies you’ll need while packing. If you’re moving furniture and other large items, make sure you protect them with moving blankets.
